Be careful…

December 27th, 2006

of what you say about something online… it might be turned into a blurb. I noticed that I started getting referrals from BeInSync.com. Turns out that they used my previous post about BeInSync for their page “BeInSync in the Blogs.”

By the way… FolderShare is working well for me… uses fewer system resources and unlike BeInSync is free.

2006 Gingerbread House

December 23rd, 2006

A tradition of long standing (since 2005!) in our home has been the construction of a gingerbread house for Christmas. As might be expected only a small percentage of available candy actually made it onto the house. Unlike last year, we received no visitors during the activity (see last picture).

FolderShare

December 19th, 2006

It appears that FolderShare is the file syncing utility I have been looking for ever since I tasted the possibilities with BeInSync. What I need is the ability to automatically synchronize folders between two computers on a network. BeInSync does all of this very well but is a paid service after a trial period. FolderShare, which is owned by Microsoft, is free. It also offers the option to access files on any of your FolderShare-enabled PCs from anywhere on the Internet which is a nice feature. It does not hog resources which is important to me and works completely in the background, with the option of a blinking system tray icon when a file has been synced. Aside to seth: There’s a mac version as well. This looks like a utility that will become hard to live without.

Skype Unlimited Calling

December 17th, 2006

For much of 2006 Skype has offered free unlimited long distance calling within the U.S. and Canada. I was curious to see what Skype would come up with to replace this promotion (which ends December 31) particularly as the field of VoIP has become quite a bit more competitive in the past year. iCall, for example, now offers totally free calls within the U.S. and Canada, as well as free inbound access numbers.

Skype is ending the free promotion and is offering unlimited calling within the U.S. and Canada for $29.95 a year (50% off if you purchase now). I figure Skype is worth $15 a year by a long shot, and is to be preferred over other cheaper services because of the great variety of hardware that works with Skype. I like my Skype adaptor which allows you to use any regular corded or cordless phone as a Skype phone and landline phone at the same time.

Until other companies come up with more hardware that frees up VoIP from the PC mic and speakers I think Skype will remain the best option. And the two remaining hurdles for VoIP to jump before I will consider scrapping local phone service is 1) the ability to change over an existing local telephone number to the VoIP service (you can already do this with cell phones) and 2) the ability to call local 911 through the VoIP client. Meanwhile I will grudgingly continue to fork over $24.95 a month to Embarq.

Will you also go away? (John 6)

December 17th, 2006

We all have experienced or will experience encounters of the call of Jesus Christ during our lives.

I remember a time when I experienced the call of Christ on my life.
Growing up and being taught about God and the Bible and many other truths there were times when I experienced things like guilt, conviction, sorrow for sin, etc. Most of the time I tried to do what was right and wanted to be a child of God and be saved, etc.

However even though I went on to be baptized and join the church, I never grasped fully the call of Jesus until I was about 18 when I listened to a message at a tent meeting. I responded to the altar call – not with this or that sin to confess, which I had done many times before in my attempt to do what was right (and which is the reason many people respond at altar calls) – but rather I simply came face to face with this idea: I wanted to follow Jesus no matter what the cost.

Did he hear me?

December 9th, 2006

Today my wife called me at work, in great distress.  Scott had pulled Bryce off his stool, trying to get him to come play.  Bryce was drinking from a cup at the time, and he fell off the stool with his face coming down hard on the cup which was still in his mouth.

The edge of the cup cut a deep gash inside Bryce’s mouth, with just a bit of the cut visible from the outside.  The wound bled profusely and we talked about whether it was necessary to get medical attention.  We waited a while and concluded that it should heal quickly and would probably be fine.

When I got home from work I cornered Scott and asked him rather sternly whether he had told Bryce that he was sorry.

“I prayed to God,” Scott said looking down.

“What?” I asked.  “What did you say to God?”

“Bryce get better.”

I went over and told my wife about it.  “Oh that must be what Scott meant when he came and said, ‘Did he hear me?’”  Michelle said that it crossed her mind that Scott had been shaken by seeing how badly Bryce was hurt and had thought about praying about it.  So she told him simply, “Yes, he did.”

I think so too!

Christian Audio free download of the month: Pilgrim’s Progress

December 1st, 2006

This month’s free download at christianaudio.com is a special edition of Pilgrim’s Progress for Young Adults. If you have not checked out this audio book site I would highly recommend it. The sound quality and the reading itself is nothing short of excellent. So far I have been kept busy just enjoying their free downloads but I would not hesitate to purchase any of their fine books. Make your driving time more worthwhile by listening to these wholesome works.
