Great portraits at a local studio.

April 11th, 2007

Hey, upstairs is pretty local. With a digital camera, Picasa, a few props, a sweet subject, and three little brothers to make her smile, who needs a “real” studio?

Trashy Woodworking Project.

April 11th, 2007

It’s easy to do woodworking projects for your wife when she favors the distressed look (my projects look that way without trying). I got an idea for what I wanted from this trash bin on the JC Penney website. I forgot to make sure that a tall kitchen bag could slip over the top before I finished it and ended up having to cut the whole top off and make it differently. I like the finished product OK but if I think too long about how much work it was, $59.99 for the one from JC Penney doesn’t sound as expensive as it did before!

March Madness – 70 works cataloged at Librivox.org!

April 1st, 2007

I wasn’t aware this event was going on, but I did notice there was a lot of activity in the New Releases department over at Librivox.org.

Here are the Librivox.org books I have listened to:

The Rosary; Innocence of Father Brown; Wisdom of Father Brown; A Tale of Two Cities; Notes from the Underground; The Scarlet Pimpernel*; Robinson Crusoe; Psmith in the City.

*This books ranks in the top ten fiction books I’ve read. Librivox’s audio version is extremely well done; I like when books are read solo as this one is done.

Here’s my short Librivox wish list:

Fiction: The Man Who Knew Too Much; Silas Marner; The Wind in the Willows; Moby Dick; Childhood.

Non-fiction: On Loving God; God’s Troubadour; Mariner of St. Malo; Collected Works of St. Patrick; History of the Peloponnesian War.

Makes me look forward in a way to the summer produce season. In my opinion there’s nothing better to do if you put in much road time than to take in a good book. Especially these days when there seems to be less and less time to sit down and read. Then again, you have to wonder whether constant listening/reading displaces original or creative thinking. Whatever happened to meditation?

Free Audiobook of the Month at Christian Audio

April 1st, 2007

This month’s free audiobook at Christian Audio is On Christian Doctrine (Unabridged) by St. Augustine. Augustine is one of those writers that I want to have read but have never managed to read. Maybe this would be a good way to get started. Something tells me this would not be good listening material if you are struggling with tiredness. But who knows.
