Here are a few pictures from her party last evening. First birthdays are not all that exciting for a one-year-old (they usually are confused and play more with the wrapping paper than with the present), but they are an excuse to get the grandparents and uncles and aunts to visit.

This month the book The Resurrection by Leo Tolstoy is free at christianaudio.com. Tolstoy never disappoints so I expect it to be a thought-provoking book.

Other audiobook news: I am currently listening to The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Vol. 1 read by the volunteers of Librivox.org. I can’t imagine the tedium of recording a book like this. But compared to the tedium of listening to it… no actually I am finding it interesting. I have often heard about the parallels of Rome at the height of its power to the United States and I think I can see some of those beginning to emerge. I remember when teaching A Beka language there was a sentence that declared Gibbon’s series anti-Christian or something like that. I have been listening for a an indication of why they say this but haven’t come across anything so far. But then I am only part way through volume one of six!
My iPod’s battery is supposed to last for ten hours so I suppose that means it will need to be recharged when I get to the middle of the book which is nearly twenty hours of audio. Whew.

Beets. I read that the greens are good for salad. Don’t believe it. Maybe when they are young and tender?

Slight clarification on the following. Zucchini erupted from the earth rather than being coaxed from it.

Acid-free tomatoes.
