Why revival cannot continue long… according to John Wesley

October 28th, 2007

“I fear, wherever riches have increased, the essence of religion has decreased in the same proportion. Therefore, I do not see how it is possible, in the nature of things, for any revival of religion to continue long. For religion must necessarily produce both industry and frugality, and these cannot but produce riches. But as riches increase, so will pride, anger, and love of the world in all its branches.”

- John Wesley, via Ben Witherington

They’ve got me curious…

October 26th, 2007

…about what’s up at Christianaudio.com.  First this email:

we also have some news about ChristianAudio.com.  There are two things we are doing next week that are going to cause in you a nearly uncontrollable desire to crash our servers.  Please don’t!  ChristianAudio.com is having an amazing sale from Nov.1 – Nov. 4 on all digital downloads.  Also, our November Free Audiobook of the Month is going to be a really really good one.  We cannot announce what it will be quite yet.  Well, we’ll just give a little hint.  The title starts with “Rel” and ends with “ions”.  So browse through our nearly 700 products and see if you can figure it out.

That wasn’t too hard to figure out. Then this on their website:

What do you do when you know you’re going to get attacked… by people you like?! Maybe the answer depends on circumstances. In our case, we are going right to the source of the attack, you. And we’re asking for your help.

First let us explain why you are going to attack the ChristianAudio.com servers. The reason is simple. We are going to run an amazing sale in celebration of All Saints Day. The sale will last from November 1st through November 4th. It’s going to be a really good sale. But we are also going to release our next Free Audiobook of the Month on November 1st. It’s going to be a really good audiobook. What does all this mean? It means that on November 1st you are going to be mightily tempted to attack our servers. Please don’t!

We are asking for your help to keep our servers alive and make the All Saints Day Sale and Free Audiobook of the Month enjoyable for everyone. All you need are two of the Fruits of the Spirit, patience and self-control.

See the website for more details.

It’s that time of year again

October 16th, 2007

That’s right, it’s time to take family pictures. My wife’s sister and her boyfriend were kind enough to do them for us. Then we took a few for them and it was unbelievable how much easier it was to photograph one or two adults who for the most part sat still and maintained the proper expressions and such. I think when our family is, like, bigger (speaking of quantity here) we will have to change this family picture business to every other year.

A Few Blogs I Like

October 7th, 2007

I thought I would mention a few blogs that have caught my attention recently. I am not sure how I happened on to each of them but here they are.

Amish America by Eric Wesner is a fascinating current viewpoint on the Amish gained from traveling and doing business in Amish communities across the country. Having been Amish until age nine, I find it interesting to read his “outsider” perspective.
