Photos of my family when we were Amish are very, very rare. The few we did have were burned when my mother became a Christian and decided to be a law-abiding church member. (Amish are officially forbidden to have photographs.) My dad’s cousin sent him these two pictures last week. I wonder where they have been gathering dust all these years.
This is me and my brothers Jonathan and David. I must have been eight or nine years old.

This is my dad.

I have been trying a feature of Google Reader, by which you can post shared items to another website. On the left column of this blog you can see a box titled “Michael’s shared items” containing snippets of the most recent items I have chosen to share. These are blog posts that I have found interesting for one reason or another. Enjoy.

Hurlbut’s Story of the Bible is an old Bible story book that I remember reading when growing up. In fact my dad remembers being paid $5.00 by my grandmother back in the sixties for reading it cover to cover. For some reason I remember the stories as being especially interesting.
Librivox.org is currently working on recording this book, and they have just released part three. I downloaded part one a few months ago and Lane was glued to the computer as the stories played. Every once in awhile the author throws in an interpretive bit such as this one, about Abraham: “Abraham had two wives. Back then they were allowed to have more than one wife, but today it is WICKED.” Funny.
Anyway, it’s a great book for the children.
